Examining How School Resources Contribute to Income Achievement Disparities Across Race and Ethnicity.

Abstract
This article examines how family income relates to elementary students' academic achievement through the mediating roles of school district-level financial and social resources, with attention to variations by race and ethnicity. Using a nationally representative longitudinal dataset of U.S. public school children from kindergarten through 5th grade, the study found that higher family income was associated with attending schools with greater social resources—measured by family socioeconomic status within districts—with this effect nearly twice as strong for White children compared to children of color. However, neither school financial resources (per pupil expenditures) nor social resources significantly mediated the relationship between family income and student achievement in reading, math, or science; unexpectedly, higher financial resources were linked to slightly lower science achievement. The study also identified racial and ethnic differences, including that Black children showed a stronger positive association between school social resources and science achievement, and that family income's link to school financial resources was negative for Asian children. These findings highlight complex interactions among income, race, school contexts, and achievement, suggesting that while compensatory funding policies may have equalized financial resources across schools, disparities in social resources and their differential impacts warrant further investigation to inform equitable educational policies.
