Abstract

The article explores how a ballad describing an auto de fe, or act of faith, that was part of a religious procession possibly designed to mimic the Last Judgement, spooked the Spanish Inquisition in Logroño, Spain. It informs about the pamphlet and ballad format published by the printer Juan de Mongastón Fox describing the evil deeds of the Basque witches at the sabbat. Also noted is the hostility of the Spanish Inquisition's supreme council to the printed verses of the ballad.
