Abstract

This work examines how contemporary Indigenous writers in Canada incorporate the tradition of oral storytelling into their literature, focusing on three significant characters in Indigenous narratives: Sky Woman, the trickster, and the windigo. It argues that these figures not only convey but embody core Indigenous principles of relationality, reciprocity, and respect, which shape not only themes but also the narrative structure and referential frameworks of the texts. The study highlights storytelling as a dynamic, culturally embedded process essential to Indigenous worldviews and emphasizes the importance of Indigenous epistemologies in understanding these narratives. It also addresses issues of cultural appropriation and the ongoing struggle for Indigenous voices within Canadian literature.
