Abstract

The article focuses on a report by Tōpūtanga Tapuhi Kaitiaki o Aotearoa–NZNO revealing critical understaffing and unsafe conditions in New Zealand's aged-care sector, based on nearly 500 interviews and surveys with nurses and healthcare assistants. Key findings include 96% of workers deeming workplaces unsafe, widespread understaffing, inadequate care such as missed showers and delayed meals, and insufficient cultural safety for Māori and other diverse residents. The report recommends legally enforceable minimum staffing ratios based on residents' care needs, culturally safe practices, improved workforce planning, and greater worker representation. While the government acknowledges challenges and increased funding, it disputes the sector being in crisis, emphasizing ongoing system-level reforms.
