Abstract
The article focuses on the role of religious thoughts, particularly correct Islamic teachings and functional education, as pathways for managing violent extremism in Nigeria. It examines the rise of extremist groups like Boko Haram in northern Nigeria within the broader Sahel context, highlighting how extremist ideologies exploit state failure, poverty, and socio-political grievances to recruit and mobilize followers. The study underscores the Nigerian National Policy on Education’s emphasis on inclusive, value-based education as a critical tool to counter violent extremism by promoting tolerance, critical thinking, and socio-economic empowerment. It advocates for integrating religious education and community engagement into curricula to foster peace and reduce susceptibility to radicalization, recommending non-kinetic, education-centered strategies over purely military approaches.
