Abstract
The article focuses on the collaboration between filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles and film distributor Amos Vogel, particularly regarding Van Peebles's early short film *Three Pickup Men for Herrick* (1957). It explores how Vogel's influence propelled Van Peebles's career by connecting him with international distribution networks, while also suggesting that Vogel's insistence on editing the film may have obscured its original experimental aesthetic and radical commentary on racial capitalism. The piece argues that this encounter highlights the complexities of Black radical cinema's development and the dynamics of power between Black filmmakers and white industry gatekeepers during the civil rights era. Ultimately, it posits that the collaboration was pivotal in shaping the future of Black filmmaking and its relationship with mainstream cinema. [Extracted from the article]
