Abstract
This article focuses on Sergei Eisenstein’s 1925 film *Battleship Potemkin* and its relationship to the actual 1905 mutiny aboard the Russian battleship Potemkin. While the film is celebrated as a cinematic masterpiece and influential propaganda piece, historians and eyewitness Ivan Beshoff, a surviving crew member, confirm that many dramatic scenes—such as the Odessa Steps massacre—were fictionalized or synthesized from various events during the 1905 revolution. Eisenstein openly acknowledged using artistic license to condense and dramatize historical atrocities for emotional impact and political messaging. Beshoff’s personal recollections provide a nuanced, sometimes contradictory perspective on the mutiny, highlighting the harsh conditions aboard the ship and the complex aftermath, including his later life in Ireland.
