Abstract

The article focuses on the cinematography and production of *Amrum*, a film set during the final days of World War II on the German North Sea island of Amrum, depicting a 12-year-old boy’s struggle amid shifting local loyalties. German cinematographer Karl-Walter Lindenlaub, ASC, BVK, returned to Germany after 35 years to shoot the film using the Arri Alexa 35 camera and prototype Arri Ensō Prime lenses, emphasizing natural light and minimal coverage due to the young lead actor’s limited working hours. The production involved a lean, highly skilled crew and was split between studio interiors in Hamburg, location shoots on Amrum, and village scenes in Denmark, with a focus on period accuracy and atmospheric lighting. The article also highlights the collaboration with director Fatih Akin and the technical challenges overcome during filming, including innovative camera stabilization and lighting solutions.
