Abstract
This article examines the cinematic representation of the Indian megacity Mumbai in two post-2010 independent films, *Dhobi Ghat* (Mumbai Diaries) directed by Kiran Rao and *Island City* directed by Ruchika Oberoi, situating the city as a complex, multi-layered character integral to the narratives. Both films, categorized as part of the "new Indian Indies," depart from mainstream Bollywood by focusing on diverse urban experiences across class, migration, and socio-economic divides, portraying Mumbai's contradictions, including its overcrowding, class fragmentation, and corporate culture. *Dhobi Ghat* uses intimate, documentary-style storytelling to depict the lives of migrants and middle-class residents, emphasizing the city's paradoxical nature and social inequalities, while *Island City* employs interwoven narratives to critique corporate surveillance, urban alienation, and the blurring of reality and media-driven hyperreality. Together, these films challenge traditional urban discourses by foregrounding marginalized voices and presenting Mumbai as both a human spectator and a mechanized entity, reflecting the city's heterogeneous social fabric and ongoing transformations.
