Abstract
The article focuses on the history, development, and distinctive features of Ruskino, a Russian film festival established in 2011 by the Centre of Russian Art Studies (CSAR) at Ca' Foscari University in Venice. Ruskino is notable for its academic origins and broad community involvement, including university and secondary school students, who participate in a subtitling competition for Russian films showcased at the festival. Over the years, the festival has hosted premieres, retrospectives, and collaborations with Russian cultural institutions, featuring prominent directors such as Alexander Sokurov and Karen Shakhnazarov. CSAR also engages in international academic collaborations and organizes related exhibitions, conferences, and publications on Russian art and cinema. The festival's adaptation to online formats during the 2020 health emergency expanded its audience, and ongoing initiatives aim to deepen cultural exchange and educational opportunities connected to Russian cinema.
