Abstract
This article provides a brief overview of key events that occurred during the month of March 1944 in World War II. The Battle of Imphal in northeast India saw the Japanese attempting to destroy British and Indian forces, but their attack was effectively halted and they were forced to retreat into Burma. At Stalag Luft III prison camp, RAF POWs attempted a mass escape through a tunnel, but the plan was foiled and many were captured and executed by the Germans. The release of the film "The Purple Heart" caused controversy as it depicted the Japanese treatment of POWs, and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy caused chaos and destruction.
