Abstract
This article focuses on the development and evaluation of the Mindful Movement Programme (MMP), a martial arts-inspired intervention designed to enhance self-esteem and mental wellbeing in children. The MMP adapts simplified techniques from Wing Chun Kuen and Bāguàzhäng, removing elements that could cause injury or be misapplied, and was tested in a four-week quasi-experimental study with 11-year-old participants. Results showed a statistically significant increase in both trait and state self-esteem for children in the experimental group, while self-esteem decreased in the control group; qualitative feedback highlighted experiences of relaxation, enjoyment, and absorption, aligning with Maslow’s concept of the plateau experience—a state of calmness and self-transcendence. The study suggests that such a safe, inclusive, and easy-to-learn programme could be feasibly implemented in school settings to support children’s mental health, especially in the context of increased anxiety and depression following the Covid-19 pandemic.
