Abstract
The article from the Scottish Historical Review discusses the regnal year of Edward Balliol, King of Scots, and examines possible dates for the beginning of his reign. Modern historians generally accept that his regnal year began on 24 September 1332, when he held his coronation at Scone. The article delves into the historical context surrounding Balliol's claim to the throne and analyzes various documents to narrow down the possible period for the regnal starting date. It also explores the concept of bellum hostile and divine judgement in determining the legitimacy of Balliol's kingship. The study contributes to revising the dates of some documents produced by Balliol and deepens our understanding of the relationship between a king's reign and his coronation in early fourteenth-century Scotland.
