Abstract

This article examines filmmaker Spike Lee's strategic use of popular music compilation soundtracks in three of his historically based films—*Malcolm X* (1992), *Crooklyn* (1994), and *BlacKkKlansman* (2018)—to situate narratives within their specific time periods and deepen viewers' emotional engagement with American history. Lee's carefully curated soundtracks function not only as temporal markers but also as narrative devices that amplify social and cultural themes, fostering empathy and personal connection between audiences and the films' characters and settings. By blending popular music with original scores, Lee enhances the films' authenticity and underscores ongoing social justice issues, thereby embedding the cinematic experience within a broader historical and cultural context. The article highlights how Lee's use of music transcends mere background accompaniment to become integral in conveying the films' messages and resonating across generations.
