Abstract

The article discusses the expiration of the copyright on the cartoon character Mickey Mouse. Originally introduced in the 1928 film Steamboat Willie, Mickey Mouse became the face of the Walt Disney Company. Disney has fought to maintain copyright protection for the character, successfully lobbying for extensions in 1976 and 1998. However, as of January 2024, the copyright on Steamboat Willie has expired, allowing anyone in the U.S. to use that version of Mickey Mouse without fear of copyright infringement. The later versions of Mickey Mouse, including the iconic image with red shorts, oversize shoes, and white gloves, are still protected by copyright. [Extracted from the article]
