Abstract

This article investigates the effects of fartlek training and circuit training on increasing VO2max—maximum oxygen consumption, a key indicator of physical fitness—in kumite karate athletes from the Inkanas Resmata Dojo affiliated with the Madiun City Police in Indonesia. Using an experimental design with 17 athletes undergoing 16 training sessions each, the study employed the Multi-Step Fitness Test (MFT) and statistical t-tests to assess changes in VO2max. Results indicate that both training methods significantly improved VO2max levels, with circuit training producing a greater increase than fartlek training. The findings provide evidence supporting the use of either method to enhance cardiovascular endurance and physical performance in kumite karate athletes, while emphasizing that training choice should consider individual athlete needs and preferences.
