Abstract

The article examines the flaws in societal punishment systems and their impact on cooperation. It highlights that harsher penalties, such as "three strikes and you're out" laws, do not effectively reduce crime, and that the punitive nature of the U.S. criminal justice system correlates with high incarceration and recidivism rates. The authors propose that self-interested motives behind punishment, such as financial incentives for enforcers, erode trust and undermine cooperation, suggesting a need to reform punitive practices to foster safer and more collaborative communities.
