Abstract

The article presents an interview with actor-director Mario Van Peebles exploring Black representation in cinema through the African American western and the rediscovery of overlooked Black British narratives with cultural critic Lanre Bakare, and the cinematic legacy of Paulin Soumanou Vieyra, a trailblazing Senegalese-Beninese filmmaker. Topics include reclaiming Western film tropes, cultural resistance in Britain, and the foundations of African cinema.
