Abstract
This article focuses on composer Jeff Beal's creation and performance of a new score for the 1920 silent German Expressionist film *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari*, which premiered at Carnegie Hall on June 3. Beal, known for scoring television and documentaries, discusses his approach to composing for silent films, emphasizing the use of a jazz ensemble and choir to evoke the film's psychological and horror elements, reflecting the cultural and musical atmosphere of the Weimar Republic era. He highlights the influence of early 20th-century German music, Expressionist visuals, and psychological theories by Freud and Jung on his composition. The score incorporates both written and improvised sections, aiming to present the silent classic with a contemporary sensibility for modern audiences.
