Abstract
The article focuses on the illegal timber trade involving Brazilian exporters and American and European importers, highlighting how weak enforcement of environmental laws, particularly the U.S. Lacey Act, facilitates deforestation in Brazil's Amazon. Despite efforts by Brazil's environmental agency IBAMA, criminal groups like the Comando Vermelho exploit corruption and limited oversight to continue illegal logging, which funds organized crime. The article notes a significant decline in U.S. environmental enforcement under the Trump administration, contributing to ongoing noncompliance with regulations. It advocates for enhanced multinational cooperation among the U.S., European Union, and Brazil to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, curb illegal timber imports, and address the broader environmental and security impacts of the illicit trade.
