Abstract

The article focuses on a workshop titled "White, Decolonising the Balkans, Debalkanising Europe," held on August 24, 2023, in Berlin as part of the (Non)Aligned Movements project by Nomad Dance Academy. Facilitated by Biljana Tanurovska Kjulavkovski and Dražen Dragojević, the event explored contemporary discourses on decolonial struggles, emphasizing the often-overlooked Balkan region within global decolonization debates. The workshop addressed complex issues such as the racial dialectics of whiteness, the Balkans’ positioning in narratives of "catching up" with Western capitalism and democracy, and the tensions surrounding socialism and communism’s legacy. Participants engaged in collective reflection and created manifestos challenging dominant colonial and capitalist frameworks, rejecting superficial or commodified approaches to identity and history.
