Abstract
This article focuses on research analyzing homelessness among psychiatric in-patients in Berlin, Germany, over a 13-year period (2008–2021). The study, conducted by Charité – University Medicine Berlin, used retrospective data analysis of 1,205 electronic patient records to examine changes in homelessness rates and associated sociodemographic and clinical factors. Findings revealed a 15.1% increase in homeless psychiatric in-patients, with homelessness significantly linked to male gender, being born outside Germany, lack of outpatient treatment, and diagnoses including psychotic disorders, stress reactions, personality disorders, and substance dependencies. The research highlights the growing challenge of precarious social situations in psychiatric care and suggests that individualized aftercare and supported housing may help address this trend.
