Abstract
This article critically examines hospitality in the context of immigration in Winnipeg, Manitoba, focusing on host–guest dynamics, cultural discontinuities, and systemic barriers such as restrictive policies on foreign credential recognition. Drawing on qualitative data from eighteen racialized immigrant newcomers, it highlights how hospitality is experienced as both a promise and a contested reality shaped by power relations, cultural misunderstandings, and exclusionary practices. The study emphasizes the role of ethnocultural communities as microspaces of reciprocal hospitality that provide belonging and support, while advocating for a broader concept of multicultural hospitality that requires systemic change, mutual responsibility, and openness to difference beyond communitarian enclaves. It concludes that achieving multicultural hospitality involves addressing structural inequities and fostering intercultural dialogue to enable immigrants to participate fully and equitably in Canadian society.
