Abstract

The article focuses on the impact of severe flooding in Mauritania, highlighting widespread damage to infrastructure, displacement of residents, and significant agricultural losses, including around 125,000 tonnes of rice. Mauritanian media outlets reported local calls for government intervention, such as building flood protection dams, and criticized the perceived lack of state support for affected farmers and communities. President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani acknowledged the country's vulnerability to climate change, which contributes to recurring floods, droughts, desertification, and wildfires, despite Mauritania's minimal global greenhouse gas emissions. During a visit to the flood-affected Trarza region, the president launched a project to provide low-cost electricity to farms and visited displaced residents, while farmers simultaneously protested demanding compensation for their losses. The article situates Mauritania’s flooding within broader regional climate challenges affecting the Sahel.
