Abstract
This article examines the prevalence and sexual risk behaviors associated with transactional sex relationships (TSRs) in Jamaica, based on secondary analysis of the 2012 nationally representative Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviour, and Practices (KABP) survey. TSRs involve the exchange of sex for material support, with participants categorized as beneficiaries, benefactors, or "Benefluids"—individuals who simultaneously play both roles. Findings indicate that 38% of respondents engaged in TSRs, with males, particularly Benefluids, reporting multiple partners and higher sexual risk behaviors, while females reported more sexually transmitted infection (STI) symptoms. Predictors of increased sexual risk included younger age, male gender, early sexual debut, alcohol consumption, and TSR participation, highlighting the complex dynamics and health risks within TSRs in Jamaica.
