Abstract

This article examines trends in drug overdoses in Colombia from 2010 to 2021 using data from SIVIGILA, the National Public Health Surveillance System. It reports a 355.6% increase in age-adjusted overdose rates, with men generally experiencing higher rates except for opioids and psychotropic medications, which were more prevalent among women. Overdoses involving cannabis and stimulants rose until 2017 but declined thereafter, while intentional overdoses involving tranquilizers, sedatives, or antidepressants sharply increased from 2018 to 2021, particularly among young women. The study highlights the importance of surveillance data in guiding targeted prevention efforts and notes the need for enhanced mental health and harm-reduction interventions to address rising intentional overdoses in vulnerable populations.
