Abstract

The article discusses ways to address medical debt as a public health and health equity issue in the U.S. with a particular focus on the work of the New York City (NYC) Health Department. Topics include the infrastructure and strategies developed by the Department to monitor, mitigate and prevent medical debt and its negative health and economic impact in NYC, an estimated total burden of medical debt in the U.S., and its contribution to personal bankruptcy.
