"Historians Who Walk": Historical Thinking and Urban Landscapes in New York City and Philadelphia.

Abstract

The article explores how urban landscapes can serve as sites for historical inquiry by analyzing historical walks conducted by historians and students in New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Topics include the role of walking in historical thinking, the impact of gentrification and urban renewal on cityscapes and the use of architecture and local landmarks as historical evidence. Also cited is how physical spaces can deepen understanding of themes like immigration and cultural change.
