Abstract

This article provides an overview of public school funding in New Jersey for fiscal year 2023, highlighting the state's efforts to fully fund its complex, student-based education funding formula by 2025. New Jersey's education budget totals approximately $11 billion for K-12, representing about 53% of the state's total education budget, with ongoing increases aimed at addressing equity gaps, special education costs, and pension underfunding. Key legislative actions include significant boosts to K-12 formula aid, expanded preschool funding, and measures to alleviate teacher shortages, such as allowing retired teachers to return without losing retirement benefits. Charter schools serve as the primary alternative to traditional public schools, with around 87 schools and 60,000 students statewide, though they did not receive increased funding in the latest budget.
