Abstract
This work examines English migration from North Yorkshire to North America, focusing on a largely rural population often overlooked in migration studies. Using emigrant letters and local archives, it highlights how economic factors such as declining lead mining and limited land ownership prompted many North Yorkshire residents, including farmers and miners, to seek opportunities in the rural Midwest, Canada, and western regions of the United States. Despite relative financial resources and skills, these migrants faced hardships during transatlantic voyages and settlement, often finding community through Methodism and chain migration. The study concludes that while North Yorkshire immigrants exhibited ethnic behaviors, they did not form distinct ethnic enclaves like other groups, assimilating relatively quickly into rural American society.
