Abstract
The article focuses on the description and analysis of a new fossil crayfish species, Austropotamobius plenicari sp. nov., from the late Miocene (Messinian) of Slovenia. This specimen, represented by a cephalothorax and chelipeds, shows morphological features linking it to the genus Austropotamobius, particularly resembling Austropotamobius torrentium, but with distinct differences in the epistome and postorbital carina. The fossil was found in brackish to freshwater sediments of the Raka Formation, associated with brackish-water ostracods likely reworked from older deposits. The discovery provides rare insight into European crayfish evolution, suggesting Austropotamobius plenicari lived after the divergence of major crayfish lineages and may have coexisted with the diversification of A. torrentium haplotypes.
