Abstract

The article focuses on the campaign and eventual passage of the Sex Discrimination Act of 1975 in the United Kingdom, which outlawed discrimination based on sex or marriage in employment, education, and the provision of goods and services. Spearheaded by Labour MP Joyce Butler, the Act established the Equal Opportunities Commission to enforce the law, although it exempted certain institutions and did not address issues like pensions, taxation, pregnancy, or harassment. The legislation followed years of activism from women across social classes and generations, supported by feminist groups and political figures, and coincided with related laws such as the Equal Pay Act and the Employment Protection Act. Despite its limitations, the Act marked a significant legal step toward gender equality in Britain.
