Abstract

The article reviews *Empire City: Wellington Becomes the Capital of New Zealand* by John E. Martin, highlighting its comprehensive chronological account of Wellington’s founding, growth, and development beyond its political designation as the capital. The book integrates environmental, economic, social, and cultural histories, including detailed portrayals of settler figures and Māori leaders, and addresses the impacts of colonization on local hapū. While praised for its extensive archival research and breadth—covering topics such as commerce, health, and infrastructure—the review notes that the book’s depth may limit a more thematic or critical analysis of settler colonialism and urban dynamics. Nonetheless, it is recognized as a significant resource for understanding nineteenth-century settler cities in New Zealand.
