Technological change, climate change and food production in Benin.

Abstract

This study analyses the climate change and technological change impact on food production in Benin using data from the agriculture ministry and Climate Analytics over the period 1995–2015 and a bio‐economic model. The results suggest that land‐use changes may depend on crop types and prevailing future conditions. With respect to crop production, the results show that the climate change effect on different crops varies from one municipality to another. Moreover, crops such as rice and soybean will benefit more from climate change in several Benin's municipalities, while maize will suffer from climate change. Moreover, results showed technological change globally mitigates the negative impact of moderate climate change. The results suggest that Beninese's government must invest in agriculture technology through agriculture and engineering high schools' installation, which could improve farmers' productivity and efficiency.
