Abstract
This article focuses on the memorialisation of victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, specifically examining the aesthetics and design of three memorial museums—Bisesero, Gatwaro, and Ngoma—located in Rwanda's Western Province. It highlights the work of Rwandan architect Vedaste Ngarambe, whose designs integrate traditional Rwandan mourning customs and landscape features to create interactive, embodied visitor experiences that serve as burial sites, memory bearers, and therapeutic spaces. Unlike many memorials influenced by international actors and Western museum practices, these sites emphasize local cultural symbolism and survivor engagement, balancing the needs of mourning communities with educational and transformative goals for broader audiences. The article also discusses the evolving nature of memorial construction in Rwanda, noting ongoing challenges related to resources and the unfinished process of memory transmission.
