Abstract
The article focuses on the collapse of the water-pipeline system in Burundi's largest cities, Bujumbura and Gitega, forcing residents to seek water from central pickup points and rivers. The national utility, Regideso, has not upgraded its infrastructure since the 1980s, and increased demand coupled with the onset of the dry season has halted piped water supply. The situation is exacerbated by the climate crisis, which has led to flooding and displacement, and ongoing fuel shortages hinder relief efforts by the Burundi Red Cross. Regideso is working on projects to restore water supply, with support from the World Bank considering a $60 million investment to improve the situation. [Extracted from the article]
