Abstract

The article focuses on the rising cost of living and ongoing energy and water crises in the Comoros, an Indian Ocean island nation with a 98% Sunni Muslim population. In response, the government announced measures in February, including tax breaks, a 6 billion Comorian franc fund to secure imports of basic goods, and efforts to improve electricity supply ahead of Ramadan. However, the Consumer Federation of the Comoros reports that these measures have been slow to implement, with continued increases in food prices, water shortages, and fuel quality issues affecting daily life. Residents are increasingly dependent on remittances from the diaspora to cope with these challenges, while power cuts and water shortages persist despite new generators.
