Lithium found in Marcellus Shale wastewater: Pitt study.

Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh has found that a significant amount of lithium, a lightweight metal used in rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles and clean energy grids, is stored in unconventional oil and gas brine waste from Marcellus Shale rock formations. The study suggests that 40% of the lithium used in the United States could be found in this wastewater. Extracting lithium from the wastewater could provide value and contribute to clean energy technologies. However, the extraction process is potentially dangerous and more research is needed to ensure safety. [Extracted from the article]
