Abstract
The article focuses on secret diplomatic efforts involving Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko acting as an intermediary between the Trump administration and Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Lukashenko engaged in backchannel talks with U.S. officials, offering to facilitate peace negotiations by conveying messages to Putin and advocating for a summit between Trump and Putin, while emphasizing the need for the U.S. to treat Putin with respect. Despite Lukashenko's assurances that Putin desires peace, Russia continued military operations in Ukraine, and the proposed talks risk sidelining Ukraine's government in decisions about its future. The article highlights the complexities and risks of this diplomatic approach, including Lukashenko's close ties to Putin and the potential for the peace process to favor Russian interests.
