Abstract
The main focus of the article is a review of *Football and Fascism: The Politics of Popular Culture in Portugal* (2023), a sociological study examining the complex relationship between football and the Portuguese Estado Novo regime (1933–74). Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu's field theories, the book analyzes how football evolved as a mass sport and political tool under the dictatorship, highlighting contradictions such as the regime's promotion of amateurism despite growing professionalization influenced by European competitions. The work also explores the role of media, key figures like António Ferro and Cândido De Oliveira, and the ideological use of sport in shaping national identity, while demonstrating how football sometimes served as a site of political contestation rather than mere propaganda. This volume is positioned as a significant contribution to scholarship on sport and fascism in Portugal and Southern Europe, combining rigorous historical research with sociological analysis.
