Abstract

This article examines the relationship between symptom burden and quality of life (QOL) in adult patients with cancer in Botswana, comparing those with and without HIV. The cross-sectional study of 124 patients found no significant differences in symptom burden or QOL between HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals, likely due to effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) management. Symptom burden and advanced cancer stage were significantly associated with poorer QOL, highlighting the importance of routine symptom assessment and early palliative care interventions. The findings suggest that oncology nurses play a critical role in monitoring symptoms and supporting ART adherence to improve outcomes for patients with cancer, regardless of HIV status.
