Abstract
The article reviews the BioColour 2024 Conference held at the University of Helsinki, which focused on sustainable development and innovation in bio-based dyes and pigments. The conference, part of the BioColour project funded by Finnish research councils, brought together multidisciplinary experts from science, art, design, and industry to explore alternatives to synthetic colourants, including genetically modified microorganisms and fermentation processes. Key discussions highlighted that natural colourants are not inherently safer or more scalable than synthetic dyes, emphasizing the environmental, social, and cultural complexities involved in transitioning to sustainable colourant production. The event underscored the importance of integrating scientific innovation with cultural knowledge and ethical considerations to develop bio-colourant solutions that are both environmentally responsible and socially respectful.
