Abstract
The article focuses on the Hawaii State Department of Education's (HIDOE) budget, funding priorities, and challenges for the 2024–2025 fiscal year. HIDOE manages a $2.18 billion operating budget supporting 295 schools and over 167,000 students, with funding guided by a weighted student formula that allocates additional resources for specific student needs. Key priorities include equitable, high-quality learning environments, workforce development, and operational efficiency, while challenges include teacher recruitment amid high living costs and sustaining programs previously funded by COVID-19 relief. The state also oversees 38 public charter schools under the State Public Charter School Commission, and per-pupil expenditures total $16,894 plus federal funds.
