Abstract

This article examines the life cycle of the Babetta moped, produced initially in former Czechoslovakia and later in Slovakia from around 1970 until 1999, situating its history within the broader context of the country's economic development, transport history, and post-socialist transformation. It traces the relocation of moped production from Czechia to north-western Slovakia (Považská Bystrica) and subsequently to the agricultural town of Kolárovo in southern Slovakia, highlighting the industrialisation policies and regional development efforts behind these moves. The study draws on archival sources and oral histories from former factory employees to explore how the brand's decline symbolizes the challenges faced by Slovak industry during the transition from a centrally planned to a market economy, including issues of technological competitiveness, export difficulties, and management struggles. The article also reflects on the social and economic impacts of the factory's rise and fall on the local community, emphasizing the nostalgic memories of former workers and the broader implications for understanding post-socialist industrial transformation in Eastern Europe.
