Abstract

A new variant of the Mpox virus, known as clade Ib, has been detected in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This variant, along with at least one other strain, has caused cases of Mpox in the city of over 17 million people. The detection of the clade Ib strain in Kinshasa is concerning due to the city's high population density and international connections. The co-circulation of two distinct strains highlights the complexity of Mpox outbreaks in Congo and the need for enhanced surveillance and investigation. The World Health Organization has released a draft response plan that focuses on vaccinating healthcare workers and those exposed to the virus. [Extracted from the article]
