Abstract
The article focuses on a survey assessing timber usage intensity and the demand for timber engineering expertise among professional timber handlers in Bhutan. Despite Bhutan's abundant forest resources covering over 70% of its land, the country faces challenges in timber utilization due to limited knowledge among designers, clients, and construction companies, as well as concerns about durability and fire resistance. The survey of 90 respondents from timber processing, construction, and manufacturing sectors revealed strong support—especially from manufacturing professionals—for establishing a certification course in timber engineering to address skill gaps and promote sustainable timber use. Additionally, respondents emphasized the need for timber testing facilities to support quality control and the safe application of timber in construction. The study concludes that introducing a dedicated timber engineering certification course is essential for advancing Bhutan's timber industry, aligning with its sustainable development goals and commitment to environmental conservation.
