Abstract

This article focuses on the real-world implementation of Slovenia's national HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) programme, which is fully covered by national health insurance and targets men who have sex with men (MSM). A retrospective cohort study of 190 MSM enrolled in 2022 found high self-reported adherence (95%) to either event-driven or daily PrEP regimens, with no new HIV infections or significant kidney or liver function deterioration observed during follow-up. Despite diagnosing 67 episodes of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and Mpox, the programme demonstrated safety and effectiveness, suggesting that combining PrEP with regular STI screening and vaccination has a strong public health impact among MSM in Slovenia.
