Abstract

The article focuses on the production and cultural significance of chicha (corn beer) in the Late Intermediate Period (1250–1450 AD) in northwestern Argentina, particularly at the archaeological site of Juella. The research employs interdisciplinary methods, including materiality analysis and ethnographic studies, to explore how chicha contributed to social cohesion, ethnic identity, and communal rituals among emerging societies in the region. Excavations at Juella revealed numerous ceramic vessels associated with chicha production, suggesting that these practices were integral to community gatherings and ceremonies, reinforcing social bonds and cultural traditions. The findings highlight the role of chicha in fostering communal identity and its enduring significance in Andean cultural practices. [Extracted from the article]
