Abstract

The article focuses on the City of Victoria's approach to climate change adaptation and extreme heat response, particularly following the unprecedented 2021 Pacific Northwest heat dome. It details how the City has integrated community-based adaptation (CBA) strategies and cross-sector collaboration to enhance resilience, prioritizing vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with health conditions. The City's efforts include updating emergency response plans, deploying cooling infrastructure like misting stations, and engaging diverse community stakeholders through the Climate Adaptation Working Group to co-develop tailored adaptation actions. The article highlights the importance of regional coordination, consistent public health messaging, and ongoing evaluation to improve preparedness for increasingly frequent extreme heat events driven by climate change.
