Abstract

The article "Magical South: An eight-bullet-point photoshoot of everyday life in the tourist city" explores the complex interplay between tourism, urban life, and perception in the Canary Islands, particularly Tenerife. Drawing on Walter Benjamin's theories of mechanical reproduction and the "optical unconscious," it examines how tourist destinations are shaped by images, copies, and sensory experiences that blur the boundaries between authenticity and simulacra. The text critiques the "tourist bubble" and urban processes like gentrification and bunkerization, highlighting how everyday life and tourism coexist in a dynamic yet often uncanny relationship. It also considers the role of film, advertising, and tactile perception in shaping tourist motivation and temporal experience, suggesting that tourism functions as a form of modern magic intertwined with capitalist consumption and cultural memory.
